Perez, Braves silence Phillies’ offense in series opener

Final: Braves 2, Phillies 1

WP: Williams Perez (6-6, 5.16 ERA) LP: Adam Morgan (5-7, 4.48 ERA) SV: Arodys Vizcaino (5)

Atlanta, GA – Philadelphia Phillies' (56-92) rookie southpaw Adam Morgan suffered a tough defeat in Friday evening's series opener against right hander Williams Perez and the Atlanta Braves (58-90).

Even though Morgan only surrendered two runs tonight on six hits, the Phillies' offense ultimately was shut down, as they went 0-11 with runners in scoring position and left 12 runners on base.

The Braves and Phillies got on the board with clutch, two-out hits in the bottom of the first and the top of the second innings respectively. For Atlanta, a RBI-double by left fielder Adonis Garcia, and for Philadelphia, a solo home run by catcher Cameron Rupp, his ninth of the season.

Garcia would be replaced at the conclusion of the inning with an apparent leg injury, which occurred while trying to leg out two bases during his hit to deep center field.

Fredi Gonzalez's Braves capitalized again with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Two batters after first baseman Freddie Freeman doubled to deep right field, center fielder Cameron Maybin delivered with a RBI-single to center field.

The game would remain 2-1 in favor of the Braves heading into the ninth inning.

Right fielder Jeff Francoeur began the frame with a leadoff walk. Pinch-hitting for RHP Dalier Hinojosa, who threw two shutout innings of relief tonight, Carlos Ruiz reached safely on a fielding error by third baseman Hector Olivera to put two runners on.

With two outs and down two strikes, center fielder Odubel Herrera struck out to what appeared to be the final out of the game. However, the ball thrown by Braves' closer Arodys Vizcaino was a wild pitch that ended up in the stands. As a result, Herrera was awarded first to load the bases.

The next batter, first baseman Darin Ruf, lined out sharply to second baseman Daniel Castro to end the game.

Pinch-hitting for Phillies' starter Adam Morgan in the top of the seventh, Chase d'Arnaud reached on an infield single for his first big-league hit since 2011.
