What seemed to be the making of great pitching matchup between Matt Harvey and Aaron Nola turned into Nola's shortest outing of his brief Major League career. The Mets scored three runs in both the second and the third off of the Phillies rookie, who only lasted four innings, giving up six runs and striking out four. The Mets have now won nine consecutive series' against the Phillies and end the season series with a 13-2 record.
The Mets struck first in the bottom of the second inning. David Wright hit a single to lead things off before Aaron Nola got both Michael Conforto and Travis d'Arnaud to fly out. Kelly Johnson kept things alive though with a double to left, scoring Wright to make it a 1-0 game. Ruben Tejada followed with what looked to be a bloop into right, but it was under the reach of a charging Domonic Brown, who flipped over the half wall at Citi Field. Johnson scored from second and Tejada raced all the way around to score for an inside-the-park homer, giving the Mets a 3-0 advantage. Brown was later removed from the game with what seemed to be like concussion symptoms.
New York tacked on three more in the third. Daniel Murphy doubled to drive in Curtis Granderson, who singled to lead-off the inning, making it a 4-0 game. Two batters later, Michael Conforto belted a two-run home run to left to give the Mets a 6-0 lead.
The Phillies finally got on the board in the fifth. Cody Asche led off the inning with a single. Two batters later, Freddy Galvis singled to center and advanced to second on the throw, putting runners on the corners with one down for the Phils. Erik Kratz was called on to pinch-hit for starter Aaron Nola and he ripped a two-run double into left center field, cutting the lead to 6-2. A two-out single off the bat of Cesar Hernandez scored Kratz to cut the lead in half, 6-3.
The Mets got a run back courtesy of a Travis d'Arnaud RBI-double to plate David Wright, putting the lead back at four, 7-3.
In the top of the seventh, Darnell Sweeney continued to show his power at the plate, blasting a solo home run to right center field, cutting the lead to 7-4. They had runners on the corners with just one down, but Ryan Howard grounded into an inning ending double play.
Left-hander Adam Loewen took over for Dalier Hinojosa in the seventh and surrendered an RBI single to Ruben Tejada, one of three hits he allowed in the inning. Right-hander Colton Murray made his Major League debut in the eighth, giving up a solo blast to Yoenis Cespedes, which gave New York a five run lead, 9-4. That would be the final score. Mets reliever Addison Russell came on for the ninth and set the Phillies down 1-2-3.
