Nola, Giles blank Marlins as Phillies secure series victory

Miami, FL – In the Sunday afternoon, series finale matinee with the Miami Marlins (50-74), rookie starting pitcher Aaron Nola tossed a career-high shutout eight innings on the mound as he and the Philadelphia Phillies (50-74) went on to secure the series victory.

Today's game remained knotted at zero until the top of the third innings. Follow a walk and double by second baseman Cesar Hernandez and third baseman Andres Blanco respectively, rookie outfielder Aaron Altherr hit a sacrifice fly-RBI to left field.

Scoring remained 1-0 in favor of the Phillies until the top of the seventh, when catcher Cameron Rupp hit a opposite-field blast off of the right field foul pole. Rupp now has four home runs and nine runs-batted-in over 11 games played in the month of August.

Nola was masterful this afternoon, retiring the Marlins' in order three times (2nd, 3rd, 7th) and allowing just three hits and two walks. One of these hits came on a bunt, while the other two were singles to center field.

Collectively between Nola and closer Ken Giles, who recorded his 10th save of the season this afternoon, the Marlins advanced into scoring position just one time throughout the entire game.

According to Jake Kaplan of The Philadelphia Inquirer, the 25-year-old right hander is the first Phillies starting pitcher to throw eight shutout innings at least once within his first seven major-league starts since Mike Grace in 1996.

Darnell Sweeney walked three times in four plate appearances this afternoon in his first start as  Phillie. The 24-year-old rookie hit his first major league home run last night in the 8th inning against right hander Justin Nicolin. This went a long way in sparking the Phillies' late comeback.

The Phillies and Marlins are now tied for 4th-place in the National League East, each with a 2015 regular season record of 50-74.
