Rupp revives runs; Phillies narrowly avoid sweep

Final: Phillies 7, Diamondbacks 6

WP: Aaron Nola (3-1, 4.25)  LP: Chase Anderson (5-5, 4.31) SV: Ken Giles (7)

Phoenix, AZ–Cameron Rupp's three-run homer in the sixth inning put the Phillies up for good against the Diamonbacks this evening, as the Phils took a 7-4 lead and the bullpen hung on against the potent D-backs offense for a sweep-avoiding 7-6 win.

Phillies starter Aaron Nola ran into trouble in the first inning, allowing three consecutive singles putting the Diamondbacks on the board. Nola escaped the frame after an RBI groundout by Jake Lamb.

The top of the second inning saw Jeff Francoeur hit a leadoff single and move to third on a double by Cody Asche. Rupp hit a sac fly to center, scoring Francoeur for his first run driven home of the day.

Andres Blanco's solo shot in the third would tie the game at 2 runs apiece. The Phillies took their first lead off D-backs starter Chase Anderson, who pitched five innings and allowed five runs, in the third when Rupp hit into a double play scoring Asche (Rupp was not credited with an RBI on the play.)

The D-backs' offense came out strong in the fifth against Nola, as Ender Inciarte (a former Rule 5 pick of the Phillies) singled, advanced to second, and scored on Paul Goldschmidt's triple to right. Lamb promptly singled Goldschmidt home to give Arizona a 4-3 lead and close the book on Nola's start after five innings.

Typical of the seesaw game, the Phillies tied the game in the top of the sixth with a Ryan Howard double and a Jeff Francoeur single (Howard couldn't advance.) Freddy Galvis contributed to the scoreboard with a one-out single scoring Howard, who had gotten to third on an Asche groundout. Cameron Rupp stepped in with two on in the 4-4 game, hitting an opposite-field shot to right off Keith Hessler to bring the Phillies ahead 7-4.

Arizona gained a run back in the seventh on a Welington Castillo sac fly, and another on a Chris Owings double against Luis Garcia in the eighth. With one out in the bottom of the eighth and runners on second and third, Cesar Hernandez threw Owings out at home on a tag play that was reviewed by the umpires but upheld. (D-backs manager Chip Hale, though already having used his team's challenge earlier in the game, appeared to have played a role in convincing the crew chief to take a look at the play.) Ken Giles, brought in for a four-out save, faced Paul Goldschmidt, a homer short of the cycle, and struck out the .341 hitter on an excellent 3-2 slider chased by Goldy to end the inning.

After former starter Daniel Hudson kept the Phillies scoreless in the eighth and ninth, Arizona faced its last licks against Giles. Lamb and Castillo made the first two outs of the inning before David Peralta singled, bringing up Jamie Romak as the Diamondbacks' last hope. Giles blew a 98mph fastball on 3-2 past Romak for the game, salvaging the otherwise disastrous series for the Phillies in their 7-6 win.

The Phillies get tomorrow off as a travel day, heading up to Milwaukee where Adam Morgan will face Wily Peralta at 8:10 PM on Friday, August 14.
