Franco leaves game early with left wrist contusion; Phillies blown out by D-Backs for second straight night

Final: Diamondbacks 13, Phillies 1

WP: Jeremy Hellickson (8-8, 4.73 ERA) LP: David Buchanan (2-7, 9.00 ERA)

Phoenix, AZ – For the first time since 1993 against the San Francisco Giants at Veterans Stadium, the Philadelphia Phillies (45-69) have allowed 13+ runs in consecutive games (@BoopStats).

Center fielder Odubel Herrera's 13-game hitting streak has come to a close, as he went 0-4 tonight against opposing pitcher Jeremy Hellickson, who threw eight innings of one-run baseball.

In second baseman Chase Utley's fifth game since returning from the disabled list on August 7, the 36-year-old, six-time All-Star went 2-4. His average has risen from .179 to .196 over this stretch, with seven hits in 17 at-bats.

The Phillies got out to an early 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning, but it came at the cost of their prized rookie third baseman, Maikel Franco. With two outs and the count at 1-1, Franco was hit by an 89 MPH fastball on his left wrist by opposing starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson.

Utility infielder Andres Blanco entered as an injury replacement on first base. He eventually came around to score during the next at-bat, because of a fielding error by opposing right fielder Yasmany Tomas.

Franco's X-rays reportedly came out negative, revealing that he has suffered a left wrist contusion. This was a relief for fans who feared a fracture, which would have likely sidelined the 22-year-old for a majority, if not all, of the remaining 48 games of the season.

In the bottom of the second, the Diamondbacks combined for 11 runs over 10 hits and 15 batters against Phillies' starter David Buchanan, who was pulled after recording just five outs for the night. He allowed two home runs: a grand slam to left fielder David Peralta, and two-run home run to second baseman Aaron Hill, his fifth of the season.

As The Philadelphia Inquirer's Jake Kaplan notes, Buchanan is the first Phillies starting pitcher since Al Jurisich in 1947 to allow 11 runs in an outing. This was one run shy of the Phillies' record for amount of runs allowed by a pitcher in an outing, set by Hal Kelleher in 1938.

Hellickson helped his own cause by going 2-2 in the inning with three runs-batted-in. Pedro Mourna, a Los Angeles reporter for the Angels and Dodgers of the Orange County Register notes the following:

Buchanan allowed seven runs in just four innings in his last start on August 6. In five and two-thirds innings pitched in the month of August, the 26-year-old right hander has a 28.59 ERA and a 4.235 WHIP ratio.

Tomas exited tonight's game early for the Diamondbacks, in the top of the third, with tightness in his left calf. He was replaced by former Phillie from Spring Training of 2013, Ender Inciarte.

In the bottom of the fifth, Arizona added an insurance run off of southpaw Adam Loewen, as Peralta hit singled-home center fielder A.J. Pollock for his fifth run-batted-in of the game. This tied his career-high. An inning later, catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia took Lowen deep for his sixth career home run against the Phillies in 31 games. This was the final run scored of the night for either sides, putting the Diamondbacks on top, 13-1.
