Herrera, Hernandez help Phillies past Padres

In Friday's win in San Diego, the Phillies needed four solo home runs to rally from a 3-0 deficit to claim a 4-3 win.  On Saturday, they used timely hitting to take the early lead and pad it late to continue their hot streak.

Odubel Herrera and Cesar Hernandez had key RBI hits in the game, helping the Phillies claim another series and win their 15th game in 20 since the All-Star Break, defeating the San Diego Padres, 4-2, at Petco Park. The win also moved the Phillies out of a tie with the Miami Marlins for the worst record in baseball.

The Phillies jumped out to an early lead in the first. Chase Utley doubled to open the game and scored on an RBI single by Herrera. Herrera scored on a wild pitch with Ryan Howard batting.

Herrera drove in the third run of the game for the Phillies, scoring Hernandez with a single in the third.

Adam Morgan struck out four Padres through three perfect innings before running into trouble in the fourth. The first two batters singled to reach. Matt Kemp followed with a single to center to score a run, but Derek Norris was thrown out going to third. Morgan would rebound to finish the inning, stranding two runners on base.

The Padres cut the lead to one in the sixth. A single by Justin Upton and error by Cody Asche put a runner in scoring position with two outs. Jedd Gyorko followed with an RBI single off the glove of Utley into center.

Morgan finished after six innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

In the seventh, the Padres threatened, putting the tying run on second with no outs after back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. But Jeanmar Gomez retired the next three batters to escape the jam.

The Phillies used the next inning to add some insurance. Utley hit his second double of the game with one out and Hernandez followed with an RBI triple.

Luis Garcia pitched a scoreless eighth and Ken Giles closed things out in the ninth to seal the win.
