The Phillies subtracted Kevin Correia and Sean O'Sullivan from their rotation this week and added young arms Severino Gonzalez and David Buchanan. With the team attempting to give young guys every opportunity to get playing time, it makes sense. Unfortunately, one young Phillies pitcher is still on the mend and will require a second surgery.
In June 2014, Jonathan Pettibone had an operation to repair a labrum tear in his pitching shoulder. After targeting May as a possible return date, Pettibone has had a set back. According to Jake Kaplan of Philly.com Sports, Pettibone needed to come off of the mound on Monday during a simulated game. Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said that the 24-year-old right-hander might need another operation on his pitching shoulder. On Wednesday night, that was confirmed.
Pettibone started 18 games for the Phillies in 2013, mostly filling in for an injured Cliff Lee. He went 5-4 with a 4.04 ERA. Last season, he spent most of his time with the Ironpigs before getting hurt, posting a 3.42 ERA in 26 1/3 innings.
