Fresh off Sandberg’s resignation, Phils face scorching Scherzer

After yesterday's off day and this afternoon's surprising news that Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg stepped down from his position, the Phillies earn no respite as new skipper Pete Mackanin leads his team against the Nats (40-33) and the red-hot Max Scherzer tonight in the series opener at Citizens Bank Park.

Starting Pitching Matchup:

Philadelphia Phillies (26-48) Washington Nationals (40-33)
RHP Aaron Harang RHP Max Scherzer
(4-9, 3.41 ERA) (8-5, 1.76 ERA)

Aaron Harang (4-9, 3.41) allowed seven hits and four runs in his last start against the Cardinals, going six innings in what ended up a 10-1 Phillies loss. He starts tonight for the Phillies against Max

Scherzer, who fell a suspicious hit-batsman short of a perfect game in his previous start against the Pittsburgh Pirates, settling for a magnificent no-hitter. Scherzer, second in the NL in ERA, has a favorable matchup tonight against a team in disarray.
