Yankees blow out punchless Phils in series finale

Final: Yankees 10, Phillies 2

WP: Ivan Nova (1-0, 0.00) LP: Cole Hamels (5-6, 3.26)

New York, NY- Cole Hamels added to his turbulent week this afternoon, compounding a skipped start and various trade rumors with a drubbing at the hands of the New York Yankees, giving up five runs in a 10-2 Phillies loss in the last game of this three-game series.

The scoring began early for the Yankees, who loaded the bases in the bottom of the second. On a fielder's choice and an error by third baseman Andres Blanco, Chris Young and John Ryan Murphy crossed the plate for a 2-0 lead for the Bronx Bombers (39-33).

Brett Gardner's RBI single, Chase Headley's RBI double, and another run-scoring single from Mark Teixeira against Cole Hamels in the fourth made it 5-0 Yankees. Hamels threw five innings in total, allowing eight hits and five runs in his return to the rotation following missing his start last Friday against the Cardinals with a minor hamstring strain.

Chris Young contributed an RBI single in the sixth against reliever Jake Diekman to extend the Yankees' lead to 6-0.

Ivan Nova of the Yankees, returning from Tommy John surgery and pitching for the first time this year, pitched well, going 6.2 shutout innings and allowing just three hits.

In the seventh, the Yankees put the game even farther out of reach, scoring four runs on hits by Jose Pirela, Alex Rodriguez, and Mark Teixeira to stretch their lead to 10-0 with Justin De Fratus on the mound for the Phils.

The Phillies narrowly avoided a shutout by scoring twice in the ninth against Yanks reliever Diego Moreno, as Domonic Brown drove in Ryan Howard on a single and scored on an RBI groundout by Cody Asche. It was too little, too late for the Phillies, who lost 10-2.

The Phils prevailed in the series, but failed to sweep the Yankees, second in the AL East. After this brief trip to the Big Apple, the Phillies get a travel day before facing the Nationals and red-hot Max Scherzer on Friday at Citizens Bank Park at 7:05.
