Phillies make moves: Seth Rosin gets big league call as Phillippe Aumont exits

The Phillies made yet another roster move today. After pitching just four innings and allowing six earned runs along with two home runs and seven walks, Phillippe Aumont's time with the Phillies is over.   The Phillies did not wait until Sunday, when the team needs to add starter Adam Morgan, to designate Aumont, enabling the overworked Phillies bullpen to add a fresh arm.

Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports:

Rosin was very deserving of a promotion.

In 26 games for AAA Lehigh Valley, Rosin is 2-1 with a 2.65 earned run average.  Rosin has three saves, but mostly pitched in a back-end role with the IronPigs.  How long Rosin stays with the Phillies could depend on what the Phillies do with the rest of their roster.

Rosin was acquired alongside catcher Tommy Joseph and outfielder Nate Schierholtz in exchange for Hunter Pence at the 2012 trade deadline.  Rosin has major league experience with two teams already, despite this being his first Phillies call-up.  In 2014, the Mets selected Rosin in the Rule 5 draft and traded his rights to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Rosin was on the Dodgers' Opening Day roster in Japan, but the team did not keep him.  Rosin was claimed by the Texas Rangers and found himself on their Opening Day roster, too.  Rosin has the distinction of being the only player in MLB history to be on two teams' Opening Day rosters.   After pitching in three games for the Rangers, Rosin was returned to the Phillies.

Aumont's removal from the 40-man roster puts his future with the Phillies organization in doubt.  Aumont will be able to make his own decision now as to what his future holds.  The Phillies might offer Aumont the opportunity to pitch at AAA Lehigh Valley, but they do not necessarily have to.  Aumont is entitled to declare free agency, if he so chooses.

The Phillies will need to make a roster move before Sunday's game to add starter Adam Morgan. Rosin could be the guy to make a quick trip back up the Northeast Extension.  Or, the Phillies could choose to option Elvis Araujo, Justin De Fratus, or Jake Diekman.  With their solid play, Ken Giles, Luis Garcia, and Jeanmar Gomez appear safe.
