Burnett, Harrison lift Pirates as Phillies fall to 20 games under .500

Final: Pirates 1, Phillies 0

WP: Antonio Bastardo (2-1, 4.32 ERA) LP: Jonathan Papelbon (1-1, 1.05 ERA)

Pittsburgh, PA - In a pitcher's duel that went into extra innings this afternoon between Cole Hamels of the Phillies and A.J. Burnett of the Pirates, the latter team ultimately prevailed.

Today was the second occurrence in the three-game series that a scoreless game headed into extras. As noted in the broadcast, this was the first time that two games in a Phillies series went into extras scoreless since 1975 against the San Francisco Giants. On Friday, the Pirates won 1-0 in the bottom of the 13th inning thanks to a RBI, walk-off single by left fielder Starling Marte.

The hero for Pittsburgh today was middle-infielder Josh Harrison, as he hit a RBI-single in the bottom of the 11th to score Jose Tabata from third.

The Pirates' rally in the 11th started with two outs, as Neil Walker singled off of Jonathan Papelbon, who was throwing in his second inning of relief. With Tabata up in the next at-bat, Freddy Galvis at short committed his ninth error of the season, a throwing error out of play, to allow both runners to advance into scoring position for Harrison to follow.

Offense-wise against former teammate A.J. Burnett, the Phillies had just six hits this afternoon, left five on base as a team, and was 0-3 with runners in scoring position.

Burnett, 38, threw nine shutout innings, subsequently lowering his ERA from 2.11 at the start of the game to 1.89 at its conclusion.

Cole Hamels threw seven shutout innings today, allowing just four hits and one walk. He struck out 12 batters, which was his most since September 14, 2010 against the Florida Marlins at Sun Life Stadium.

Near the conclusion of the game, Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia's Reuben Frank tweeted the following regarding the left hander:

"Cole Hamels has 9 career starts with 7+ innings, 0 ER & a no-decision. Only Maddux (12), Clemens (12) & Sutton (10) have more in MLB history.

Hamels' 41 career games of 6+ innings allowing 2 runs or fewer without a win are most in MLB history by pitcher in his first 300 games."

Today was Hamels' first multi-digit strikeout performance since 26 starts ago on July 24, 2014 against the San Francisco Giants.

The Phillies have now fallen to 20 games under .500, and were swept for the fifth time of the season today. They have lost ten consecutive road games, and six straight overall.
