Correia solid in debut, but Phillies lose to Pirates in extras

Final: Pirates 1, Phillies 0

WP: Antonio Bastardo (1-1, 4.60 ERA) LP: Dustin McGowan (1-2, 5.40 ERA)

Pittsburgh, PA - A game which featured an 86-minute rain delay prior to first pitch, and then a scoreless battle which lasted four hours and 34 minutes before a crowd of 33,749, ended in favor of the Pirates early Saturday morning.

Kevin Correia, 34, performed well in his first start as a Phillie, as he threw five-and-two-thirds scoreless innings on 86 pitches. His last outing of five or more shutout innings last occurred nearly a year ago today, on June 10, 2014, as a member of the Minnesota Twins.

With two outs in the top of the 12th, third baseman Maikel Franco singled off of Pirates' right hander Rob Scahill to extend his hitting streak to ten games. This was the team's 11th and final hit of the night.

An inning and a half later, with two outs and Chris Stewart on second base in the bottom of the 13th against Dustin McGowan, left fielder Starling Marte brought home the only run of the game for either team with a walk-off RBI single.

In his first appearance against his former team, left hander Antonio Bastardo received a winning decision. He retired the Phillies in order in the top of the 13th.

Philadelphia left 22 men on base tonight, and were 0-9 with runners in scoring position. Pittsburgh left 28 stranded on the other hand, but they received the big hit when it mattered as they were 1-10 with runners in scoring position.

The Phillies, who have now lost four consecutive games, signed Correia on Monday, June 8 to a major league deal worth $650K plus incentives. The 2011 National League All-Star will provide depth in the rotation, especially as the team continues to gauge interest and perhaps even trade starters Cole Hamels and Aaron Harang.
