Severino Gonzalez is pulled early, overworked Phillies bullpen cannot contain Mets

The Mets lost three games in a row to the Pittsburgh Pirates this past weekend, and it seemed ripe that the Phillies could continue their recent hot streak against a Mets team that is injured and faltering.  Without key offensive piece David Wright, could the Mets score enough runs to beat the Phillies?  The Mets had no problem scoring six runs en route to a 6-3 Mets victory.

Severino Gonzalez walked no one and struck out a career-high eight batters.  But, that was not enough for Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg to let him pitch beyond one out in the fourth inning.  The move was controversial among fans on Twitter during the game and on Phillies Post Game Live's Ricky Bottalico.   The early exit by Gonzalez with just 69 pitches undoubtedly led to an overworked bullpen giving up three runs and the Phillies' chance to win.

The big blow of the game was a three-run home run to Mets shortstop Wilmer Flores surrendered by Justin De Fratus, working his third game in a row and making his ninth appearance in the last 16 games.  De Fratus also walked his first batter since April.  While De Fratus has not pitched well as of late, the workload should be a concern for the Phillies.

Ryan Howard and Chase Utley both continued their success; Howard was 1 for 3 with a sacrifice fly.  Utley was 2 for 3 and walked.   However, the Phillies five through nine hitters in the order failed to record a hit.
