Williams struggles as Phillies drop finale to Rockies
Walks, hit batters and errors. The Phillies series finale against the Rockies was full of them.
Jerome Williams struggled and his teammates didn't help much behind him as the Rockies claimed Thursday's series finale, 7-3, to split the series with the Phillies at Coors Field.
The Phillies took the lead in the third on an RBI single by Darin Ruf, but it was quickly erased by a two-run single from Troy Tulowitzki in the bottom of the inning.
The Rockies added a third run in the third on an RBI single by Brandon Barnes. Tulowitzki was thrown out at the plate trying to score by Jeff Francoeur in right.
In the fifth, the Phillies rallied back to tie the game. Chase Utley led off the inning with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ruf. Ryan Howard followed with a solo home run to left, his ninth of the season.
But Williams gave the lead right back to the Rockies in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run home run by Michael McKenry.
Williams allowed five runs on eight hits in five innings, walking three with no strikeouts.
Back-to-back single by Daniel Descalso and Nolan Arenado produced two more runs in the seventh, extending the Rockies lead to four off Elvis Araujo.
The Phillies managed just two hits after Jorge De La Rosa's exit in the fifth, failing to get a good scoring opportunity.
Phillies pitching also failed to register a strikeout in the game.
The Phillies now head to Washington for a three-game weekend series with the Nationals. The first pitch of Friday night's opener is set for 7:05 p.m.
