Final: Phillies 7, Diamondbacks 5
WP: Jerome Williams (3-3, 5.02 ERA) LP: Archie Bradley (2-1, 3.27 ERA) SV: Jonathan Papelbon (9)
Philadelphia, PA – Saturday night the Phillies looked for their fourth win in a row and for the series win against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Jerome Williams pitched five half decent frames, two of which came after a rain delay that lasted 1 hour and 17 minutes. An unearned run would cross in the 4th from shortstop Nick Ahmed. In the 5th, Paul Goldschmidt would hit a two run homer which tightened things up. Fortunately for Williams, the bats had a good night.
Archie Bradley, who made his first start since going on the DL after getting hit in the face by a comeback pitch a few weeks ago was shaky through two innings. Jeff Francoeur would homer off him in the 2nd and before the rains came in the third, he was on the ropes with clutch RBIs from Chase Utley and Ryan Howard. The Arizona bullpen would have a tough inning in the 5th, giving up three runs between Andrew Chafin and Enrique Borjos. Worthy of high praise is Grady Sizemore who had a four hit night. Sizemore is obviously feeling some pressure with Cody Asche learning the outfield in Lehigh Valley so he's picked a nice time to click.
After five, it was a battle of the bullpens. Arizona didn't go down without making it interesting. Justin De Fratus got off to a rocky start allowing a run of an RBI single from catcher and former Phillies farmhand Tuffy Gosewisch. Jake Diekamn threw his best pitches of the season pitching 1.1 scoreless innings. Yosmany Tomas would his his first major league home run in the 8th off of Ken Giles which closed the gap to a 7-5 lead. Jonathan Papelbon would close the door in the 9th and the franchise saves leader continues to distance himself from Jose Mesa.
