Tommy Joseph’s catching future likely in doubt after suffering another concussion

The Phillies farm system is pretty devoid of young catching talent, which is why the Phillies were reportedly asking for top catching prospects such as Blake Swihart (Red Sox), Jorge Alfaro (Rangers), and Austin Hedges (Padres) in potential Cole Hamels trade scenarios.  After two injury-riddled seasons, 2015 seemed like it was make or break for Phillies catching prospect Tommy Joseph.   Joseph has unfortunately reportedly succumbed to another concussion.

Greg Joyce of the Easton Express Times reports:

This likely (or at the very least should) end Joseph's catching career.

After suffering multiple concussions, I have repeatedly written that the Phillies must move Joseph out of the catching position.  Now that he has suffered another, for Joseph's long-term cognitive health, the Phillies absolutely need to switch Joseph's position.  Blocked in the big leagues by Buster Posey, Joseph has experience playing first base in the San Francisco Giants organization.

It appears, though, Joseph himself is not willing to give up:

For his own good, Joseph must give up his catching mitt.  We have seen too many NFL players with serious issues as the result of sustained head injuries.

Joseph was hitting just .123 for the IronPigs in 2015.
