Phillies look to salvage victory in series finale against their former top prospect, Jarred Cosart

The Philadelphia Phillies (8-17) will look to avoid going ten games under (.500), as well as losing their sixth consecutive game, in today's series finale matinee against the Miami Marlins (12-12).

Left hander Elvis Araujo, who was recalled Saturday from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, will be available to make the first major league appearance of his career today. Right hander David Buchanan was optioned to Lehigh Valley to make room for Araujo, who now adds left-handed depth not seen by the Phillies' bullpen this season other than the contributions from four-year veteran Jake Diekman.

Starting Pitching Matchup:

Philadelphia Phillies (8-17) Miami Marlins (12-12)
RHP Severino Gonzalez RHP Jarred Cosart
(0-1, 23.63 ERA) (1-1, 2.49 ERA)

Severino Gonzalez made his major league debut last Tuesday with the Phillies against Michael Wacha and the St. Louis Cardinals. In just two and two-thirds innings of work, he surrendered seven earned runs on 10 hits and two walks to yield a 23.63 ERA.

According to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki, Gonzalez was the first Phillies' starting pitcher to last fewer than three innings in his major league debut since Rafael Quirico on June 25, 1996.

After the game, the 23-year-old, Panamanian right hander had the following to say to reporters regarding his first career big league outing:

"I tried to hit the catcher's mitt every time, but unfortunately my command was not there. One thing I learned is that I need to keep the ball down up here. That's definitely for sure. I learned that."

Former Phillies' prospect Jarred Cosart, who was sent to the Houston Astros as a part of the July 2011 Hunter Pence trade, will start in opposition of Gonzalez.

Cosart's only career start against his former organization came back on April 22 at Citizens Bank Park. He gave up just one earned run in six innings en-route to his first and only winning decision of the season thus far.
