The Phillies promotional schedule got a bit more defined last week when the team made some adjustments in time for tickets to go on sale (tickets became available on Thursday). The Phillies have mostly issued bobble figurines of current players (or in the case of Hunter Pence, recently traded players). Since there have already been three Chase Utley bobble figurines, two Cole Hamels and Ryan Howard figurines in the stadium giveaway, the Phillies essentially could choose to issue a Grady Sizemore bobblehead or perhaps dip into the past.
The Phillies Collector obtained some exclusive information about the alumni bobblehead giveaway, which will feature Larry Bowa first:
The topic came up organically in response to my question about why the Phillies haven't followed the lead of other teams such as the Dodgers or Cardinals in leveraging their alumni in SGA promotions. "Why do you say that? We had a John Kruk figurine a few seasons ago," Brandreth said. "In fact, we're going to do an alumni bobble head in August." Pressed for details, Scott let out one more piece of information: the alumnus was a switch-hitter – and the variant will be of him hitting from the opposite side of the plate (than the standard).
The switch-hitter probably was not Tomas Perez, so Bowa seemed to be the obvious candidate.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have been offering alumni bobbleheads for some time. When the Phillies were in Los Angeles in 2013, the giveaway was a Sandy Koufax bobblehead. The Cardinals celebrated the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Cardinals last season, mercifully not when the Phillies were present.
