Todd Bowles has certainly put his time in, serving in many positions in the National Football League. Bowles' resume includes:
Player personnel staff for the Green Bay Packers, defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Morehouse College, defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Grambling State, defensive backs coach with the New York Jets, defensive nickel package coach for the Cleveland Browns, secondary coach for the Cleveland Browns, secondary coach for the Dallas Cowboys, assistant head coach/secondary coach for the Miami Dolphins, interim head coach/secondary coach for the Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles defensive backs coach and then defensive coordinator, and Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator.
Now, Bowles will add one more job to his resume: National Football League head coach.
According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, Bowles will be named head coach of the New York Jets:

Earlier, Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer reported that another former defensive coordinator in Philadelphia, Sean McDermott, would not get the chance to interview:
#Jets have canceled their Wed. interview w/ #Panthers DC Sean McDermott, per a league source. Sounds like they have their guy.

McDermott's interview would have been his first; Bowles had two.
Bowles played for Temple before signing with the Washington Redskins as a free agent in 1986. Bowles played his whole career there, sans the 1991 season, when he spent a season with the San Francisco 49ers before heading back to the Redskins, where he played two seasons. Since retiring from playing, the safety has certainly worked his way up to the top.
