Phillies First Baseman Ryan Howard’s Family Reportedly Taking Legal Action Against Him Over Money

When Ryan Howard was a young, budding superstar, his family helped manage his money.  Howard got an allowance in the early days; his mother Cheryl is an accountant and she would be able to best take care of his funds.   Could it be that money has gotten in the way of family?

Howard Eskin of Fox 29 is reporting that money has come between family:

Howard has a long history of his finances being intertwined with family.

In this piece from 2007 carried in the Philadelphia Daily News, Howard's mother Cheryl held the role of financial advisor:

Howard, profiled on HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" in a segment to air Monday night, talks about how his financial adviser – his mother – gives him an allowance out of the money he earns.

"She handles the funds. Like, I'll get it, and then I won't see it. She'll let me look at the check, and then it's gone," Howard said.

The 27-year-old St. Louis native made $355,000 last year.

When asked by Bryant Gumbel whether she is aware her son might be the first MVP to receive an allowance from his mother, Cheryl Howard disagreed.

"I would beg to differ. I would imagine that there are quite a few who, if they don't have a wife, they have a mother, and there has to be somebody there to keep them on the straight and narrow," she said.

Howard does have a wife, Krystle, and perhaps he was simply looking to take control of his own finances.

Howard's mother lives in Kansas City.   Maybe Howard will not allow a trade there, even if Billy Butler has signed with the Oakland Athletics and the Royals need a DH.   Howard is due $60 million more over the next two seasons, so money issues in the past or not, he will remain well-compensated going forward.
