AHL:
The Lehigh Valley Phantoms fell to the Worcester Sharks on Wednesday night in a back and forth battle by a score of 4 to 3. The Phantoms started the scoring early with a goal from Taylor Leier, assisted by Petr Straka and Shayne Gostisbehere. The Sharks fought right back and got two goals before Straka could tie it back up late in the 2nd and then take the lead early in the 3rd. Unfortunately the Sharks scored just 49 seconds later to tie it up and then a shorthanded goal just a minute after that sealed the game. Anthony Stolarz stopped 31 of the 35 shots he faced in the loss.
The Phantoms got right back on the ice Friday night and put up a winning effort on the road thanks to 3 goals in the 2nd period for a 3-2 victory. Andrew Gordon scored 2 of the 3 goals and Taylor Leier stayed hot with the 3rd. Scott Laughton had an assist on the first power play goal by Gordon and Gostisbehere added another 2 assists on the latter two goals. The Monarchs closed the gap midway through the 3rd but couldn’t get another one past goaltender Rob Zepp who stopped 42 of the whopping 43 shots he faced in 60 minutes.
On a negative note, the Flyers star defensive prospect Shayne Gostisbehere went down hard in the 3rd period and skated off on his own power but did not return to the game. After an injury to prospect Samuel Morin in juniors and all the other injuries to the NHL club, this all seems like a bad dream.
The Phantoms will continue their busy week with a game in Portland tonight as they carry a 5-4-1 record in against a 6-5-0 Pirates team.
ECHL:
The Reading Royals fell to 3-4-0 as they dropped the first game of a two game set against the Fort Wayne Komets. The Royals fought back from a 1-0 deficit to lead 2-1 before allowing the next 3 goals to fall behind 4-2. The Royals scored a shorthanded goal with 7 minutes left in the game but couldn’t put the tying goal on the board.
The Royals will get right back at it tonight as they look for revenge against the Fort Wayne Komets.
