November 2, 1975
The Kansas City Scouts were in their second year of existence following the 1974 NHL Expansion from 16 to 18 teams – the other being the Washington Capitals. Short on talent and led by former Flyer Simon Nolet, who was chosen by the Scouts in the Expansion Draft, the Scouts had been embarrassed a year prior in a 10-0 whitewash by the Stanley Cup Champs.
New season, same story…
Once again on this November day, the Flyers peppered Scouts goalie Bill McKenzie with 51 shots en route to another 10-0 win. Bobby Clarke, Orest Kindrachuk and Mel Bridgman each had two goals and Wayne Stephenson collected the second regular-season shutout of his career. Ironically, his first was also against the Scouts, a 3-0 win on March 1, 1975.
There are two Flyers team records that involve the Kansas City Scouts franchise:
- The KC Scouts are the only NHL team the Flyers have beaten 10-0 twice.
- They are the only team that the Flyers have never lost to, posting a record of nine wins and a tie in the Scouts’ two year existence
With the Scouts suffering in Kansas City due to poor attendance and mounting debt, the Scouts franchise was sold to a group headed by Jack Vickers. He would move the team to Denver to start the 1976-77 season and subsequently renamed them the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies would play six NHL seasons there before relocating to New Jersey after the 1981-82 season to become the New Jersey Devils.
