With two games on back-to-back nights, the Flyers took an unseasoned team to Newark to face the New Jersey Devils. The team consisted of many players that have already been cut from Flyers camp and will be playing for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms starting this week.
In a game that was basically the AHL Flyers against the Devils regulars, the Flyers were outmatched but stayed in the game until the end. Still, the Devils managed to edge the Flyers in a 3-1 loss on Sunday night at Prudential Center.
The Devils took a 1-0 lead late in the first as Scott Gomez deflected a shot past Rob Zepp for a power-play goal.
Gomez struck again in the second for another power-play goal at 3:02.
Midway through the third period, the Flyers managed to get on the board as Robert Hagg scored short-handed on a rebound on a shot by Blair Jones to cut the lead to one.
With Zepp pulled in the final minute, Marek Zidlicky iced the game with an empty-net goal.
The Devils had seven power-play opportunities and scored on two of them. The Flyers were 0-for-3 on the power play.
The Flyers were out-shot by the Devils, 41-16. The Flyers had only seven shots through two periods compared to 35 for the Devils.
Zepp was strong in goal, stopping 38 of 40 shots he faced in the game.
The Flyers preseason record now sits a 2-2-1 following Sunday's loss.
The Flyers travel to New York to face the Rangers on Monday night and will host the Rangers on Tuesday night at Wells Fargo Center.
