What do you do when your General Manager leads the team to three consecutive lifeless, putrid seasons? Give him job security – what else? That appears to be what is happening right now in the Phillies front office.
According to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com, Ruben Amaro Jr.'s job is safe.
But Phillies president David Montgomery's support for general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. has not wavered publicly, including Tuesday at the organization's Baseball 101 Clinic and Luncheon for Women at Citizens Bank Park.
"Ruben is not on the hot seat," he told a large group of Phillies fans during a question-and-answer session.
The comment hit Twitter shortly thereafter. Montgomery could not be reached later for further comment.
However, this may not be an offseason free of anxiety for Amaro.
Amaro's contract expires after 2015. It is customary that no manager or general manager be left as a sitting lame duck manager. Will the Phillies give Amaro a contract extension this offseason? Maybe Amaro's job is safe for 2015, but if the team goes into the season without extending Amaro, that will be very telling. Amaro may get one last shot to show progress.
