The Phillies' need to rebuild was one of the storylines before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. Then, NOT making a move became the big story. This offseason those same sentiments should continue. If a report is true, then the Phillies appear to be building framework for potential deals this offseason. One of the names who could be moved is starting pitcher Cole Hamels.
Corey Seidman of CSN Philly picked up on what Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe had to say in his Sunday baseball column.
"Don’t think in 30 years of covering baseball I’ve ever seen a team (the Phillies) spend so much time scouting another team (the Red Sox) and not pull the trigger on a deal," Cafardo wrote in his Sunday notes column.
"Even after the trade deadline, the Phillies have had a scout in Boston, St. Louis, and Anaheim watching Boston’s young players. The match would be Cole Hamels for young players, and it may very well heat up this offseason. Hamels, according to a source close to him, would be open to a deal with the Red Sox."
A while back, Jayson Stark of ESPN reported that the Red Sox were NOT one of Hamels' teams on his trade list. Hamels does get to designate nine teams annually.
The Red Sox, unlike the Phillies, have shown the ability to rebuild their teams quickly, moving players and bringing in the next batch. The Red Sox won the World Series in 2007 before the Phillies did in 2008, only to win again in 2013. The Phillies will not be following the Red Sox again.
