Not only has 2014 been a tough year for Tony Gwynn Jr. personally, but on the field Gwynn has struggled as well, leading to Gwynn being designated for assignment and ultimately relased. However, it turns out that Gwynn's relationship did not end with the Phillies organization.
Ryan Lawrence of the Philadelphia Daily News reports that Gwynn has returned on a minor league deal:
The Phillies have re-signed OF Tony Gwynn Jr. to a minor league contract. He will report to Lehigh Valley (AAA).

The Iron Pigs roster currently has only three outfielders.
Why would the Phillies release Gwynn and bring him right back? Chances are the Phillies gave Gwynn the opportunity to shop for another job, with an open door to play at AAA Lehigh Valley. Gwynn's play did not really merit a major league job, so he is returning to the Phillies organization.
If the Phillies make any moves and need an outfielder down the line, Gwynn could return to the big league club. The Phillies are currently carrying five outfielders, with John Mayberry Jr. on the disabled list. There is little depth should an outfielder get injured or should someone such as Marlon Byrd be traded during the waiver trade period.
Gwynn hit .163 in 67 games for the Phillies this season.
