Yesterday, 28 major league baseball teams and "over 100 baseball officials" showed up for a workout of Cuban defector Rusney Castillo, a power-hitting outfielder. It appears that the Phillies were indeed one of those teams. Further, they may be particularly interested in signing Castillo, according to a report.
Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly reports that the Phillies not only attended the public workout showcasing Castillo, but have set up a private workout.
The Phillies, desperate to add outfield talent to their organization, will take a second look at Cuban defector Rusney Castillo in a private workout in Florida on Tuesday, according to sources.
The Phillies had more than one scout at Castillo’s workout at the University of Miami on Saturday. Twenty-eight clubs sent representatives to that workout. The total number of scouts and baseball executives at that workout was about 100, according to Baseball America.
Castillo is just a prospect; the good news is that all he would cost is money.
So far the Phillies' most recent Cuban signing, Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez, has not shown the major league club immediate results. If the Phillies are looking to infuse their club with young talent, they must use what other teams do not have as much of: money. The Phillies may or may not get some young players back before the July 31 trade deadline. This would be an instant influx of talent without trading anyone away.
