According to the Elias Sports Bureau, infielder Reid Brignac has accomplished a feat not seen in Major League Baseball since the beginning of the millenium, and the first of its kind in Phillies franchise history.
A scoreless battle Wednesday night, highlighted by a classic pitching duel between Cole Hamels and Tyson Ross, was capped-off in the bottom of the ninth with a walk-off, three-run home run by Reid Brignac.
The following day, Brignac delivered a tiebreaking, pinch-hit double in the bottom of the sixth inning, which went all the way to the outfield wall in left-center field. This gave the Phillies a late, 4-2 advantage which ultimately secured the Phillies' their third consecutive victory and the sweep over the San Diego Padres.
Brignac's five-RBI offensive performance in the span of a little over 18 hours made history according to Elias. In two consecutive games, no player had provided a walkoff home run and a pinch-hit game winning RBI since Ed Sprague, ironically of the San Diego Padres as well, accomplished the feat 14 years ago against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Who would have thought Brignac would be the first Phillie ever to accomplish this? This just goes to prove baseball is a game that is far from predictable.
