Report: Phillies Close To Calling Up 100 MPH Thrower Ken Giles

According to Anthony Gargano of 94 WIP, the Phillies are close to adding another arm to their bullpen. That would be Ken Gilies, the pitcher who perhaps throws the fastest in their whole organization. While the Phillies' bullpen has had their share of problems, they have pitched rather well as of late.

The Phillies currently have 39 players on their active roster after dropping outfielder Tyson Gillies from it on Saturday. Cesar Jiminez's 25-man and 40-man roster spots went to Ronny Cedeno. Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez would have been due to exit the 60-day disabled list, but he was shut down again with another injury. With the Phillies opening another spot, one must wonder who might take that.

Giles throws fast but according to some reports keeps the ball up. Minor league batters may swing and miss at 100 mile-per-hour fastballs, but major league hitters may put a few of those into the outfield seats.

I would rather see the Phillies wait on Giles, at least until they trade a bullpen piece like Mike Adams. The trade deadline is only next month and the Phillies will almost surely take advantage of Mike Adams' strong play with a trade for some future resources. Therefore the Phillies might as well just wait.
