Cody Asche had a rough game at third base last night. Asche had not one, not two, but three errors that directly correlated to the four runs that the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim scored last night as the Phillies fell 4-3. It was the first time a Phillies third baseman had three errors in a game since David Bell almost nine years ago to the very day. A day later, Asche and one of his teammates spoke about the rough game.
On 1210 WPHT, Chris Stigall spoke to Asche during his morning show. Asche described how awful it felt to have the errors come at his own hands:
…It’s not a feeling I would want any baseball player to feel. Just a bad feeling to have on the field, when you let your team down like that…It’s over, done, in the past. We’ll move forward and try to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” he said.
Despite South Jersey native Mike Trout coming back to Philadelphia and getting lots of attention, Asche seemed to think he took some of Trout's eyes:
“I think I maybe took a little bit of the spotlight away from him,” Asche said
As for his teammates, they stuck up for Asche, including second baseman Chase Utley, who appeared on CBS Philly's other station this morning, Sports Radio WIP:
“Well, you know, Cody [Asche] is a tough kid,” Chase Utley told the WIP Morning Show on Wednesday. “You try to stay positive with him. We’ve all been there, we’ve all made mistakes. The best players make the most mistakes because they’re on the field a lot. So, you pat him on his butt, tell him to get ‘em today. He’ll be fine.”
Asche lost his plattoon partners in the last week as Freddy Galvis was demoted to AAA Lehigh Valley and Jayson Nix was outrighted off the roster, so he figures to get the bulk of the playing time.
Asche is in today's starting lineup.
