According to Todd Zolecki, the Phillies have announced that IF/OF Cesar Hernandez, who was with Double-A Reading, will re-join the team today and be available for tonight's game against the Angels. Hernandez takes the place on the roster of Jayson Nix, who the Phillies outrighted yesterday.

Hernandez was a member of the Opening Day Phillies roster but was sent down to Reading after Freddy Galvis came off of the DL in early April. The Phillies made the move with the hopes of sharpening his skills at shortstop and third base. In six games with the big club this year, Hernandez hit .231 (3-for-13) with a double.
After being sent down, Hernandez saw a spike in his offensive production. He hit .340 (35-for-103) in 26 games for Reading with three homers and 14 RBIs. Unfortunately, his fielding wasn't as impressive, espacially at the hot corner. In 18 games at third base, Hernandez committed eight errors. He also saw some time at short, where he had a .967 fielding percentage over the span of eight games.
The addition of Hernandez will hopefully bring some more offensive production out of the bench, but we will have to see how much of a defensive liability the 23-year old utility man might be in the long run.
At this point, you cannot question this move despite his lack of success at third, as the supporting cast in 2014 has left much to be desired.
