The Flyers used Tuesday to get a jump on the deadline, acquiring defenseman Andrew MacDonald from the New York Islanders. On Wednesday, as the deadline came closer, the Flyers unloaded one of their defenseman for some return to what they had given up in the first trade.
Defenseman Andrej Meszaros has been traded to the Boston Bruins in exchange for Boston's third-round pick in the 2014 NHL Draft.
Meszaros was originally set to be a scratch for tonight's game against the Washington Capitals, an indication something may have been in the works.
Meszaros played 192 games over four seasons with the Flyers, scoring 20 goals and adding 56 assists. In 38 games this season, Meszaros had five goals and 12 assists.
The addition of MacDonald created both a jam of defensemen for the Flyers and gave the Flyers the luxury of clearing some cap space. The deal now opens up $6.4 million in free cap space as the deadline passed.
The deadline has since expired and the Flyers made no other moves. The team is in action tonight against the Capitals. The opening face-off is at 8 p.m.
