Some more Phillies news on this busy day. The AAA Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs announced today that a former Phillies favorite will be promoted in the Phillies organization to join the Iron Pigs' staff. 1993 National League Champion second baseman Mickey Morandini will move up from Class A Lakewood to be the Iron Pigs' first ever bench coach.
Returning as Iron Pigs manager is former Phillies farmhand Dave Brundage; pitching coach Ray Burris, and hitting coach Sal Rende. The bench coach is not a position that the Phillies' minor league affiliates have had before, but Morandini will be the first. Morandini served as manager of the short season Williamsport Crosscutters in 2011 before managing the Low A Lakewood Blue Claws in 2012 and 2013.
Morandini was reportedly under consideration to be the Phillies assistant hitting coach, but the position instead went to John Mizerock.
