Tuesday marked the final installment of Olympic roster announcements. And for Flyers fans, there was a shocking announcement from Hockey Canada.
Flyers captain Claude Giroux, one of the bubble players for Team Canada, was not named to the Olympic roster by Steve Yzerman and a committee of others. Among the players that made it in front of Giroux were former Flyers Jeff Carter and Patrick Sharp.
The first thought on Giroux's absence from the roster is the offseason hand injury that forced him to miss the development camp, leaving Hockey Canada officials unhappy.
Five Flyers will represent their countries in the Olympics in February. Defenseman Kimmo Timonen will play for Team Finland, also announced Tuesday morning. Mark Streit was named to Team Switzerland on Monday.
Michael Raffl will be a part of Team Austria, announced before the New Year. Also announced earlier this week, Jake Voracek will play for Czech Republic and Andrej Meszaros will play for Slovakia.
