Two fun tidbits from the Miami Marlins today.
First, Marlins President David Samson declared that the Marlins will be a playoff team in 2014. Seriously.
"I promise you this: We're not going to lose 100 games next year, not close. Look what the Red Sox did. They had the same record we did in '12 (69-93). They turned it around to be in the World Series in '13. It's time for us to do the same. That's why we didn't book that concert in October (2014). Why would we ever book something when we should be and will be playing playoff games?"
Good point. If the Red Sox did it, then automatically the Marlins will too. Now that they signed Greg Dobbs to an extension, it all adds up, right?
Samson is the son-in-law of Marlins owner and art dealer Jeffrey Loria. Samson will serve as the puppet to make all of Loria's moves, despite having no baseball background.
Second, the Marlins may have and unpaid overtime and are now under investigation for unfair labor practices.
Two Major League Baseball clubs–the San Francisco Giants and Miami Marlins—are under investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor for possible federal wage law violations. The investigations come amid wider concern about questionable pay practices throughout professional baseball, according to interviews and records obtained by FairWarning under the Freedom of Information Act.
According to the report, the Giants are believed to have used interns improperly and did not provide overtime to people who worked more than the standard 40 hours as non-exempt employees.
At least the Marlins are making the news, right?
