Yesterday, a whole hoard of Philadelphia fans went into a craze over Domonic Brown supporting his Cowboys. These very fans fed the cliche that has been described the Philadelphia sports fan on the national stage. Unhinged, childish drama over a Cowboys jersey is among the dumber things I've seen lately amongst the fan base I include myself in lately. Desean Jackson was spotted with a Nationals hat a few seasons ago. Allen Iverson was spotted wearing a Cowboys hat as well once. Do we not live in a free society where we can root for whoever we want?
The violation thing is out of control in this city. There isn't some unwritten book that many of us think there is on how to act when playing here. It's all in our heads and we get brainwashed by Philly sports talk radio and other outlets that feed into it. While I did think Brown allowed himself to get publicly sore about it, you almost can't blame him or anyone who has made some sort of remarks about the city's more unhinged fans.
Brown helped make a tough 2013 Phillies season watchable. He's an important piece of the puzzle going forward. To throw out hateful insults at him or to even be remotely upset about him wearing a Cowboys jersey and cheering for the team is really immature. So I say, if you were among those who dished it out, pat yourself on the back and next time this city is on national television and they take one of those digs at the fan base, take comfort in the fact that they're right.
