2013 in Review: The Infield

So far I've reviewed the outfielders and the starting pitchers. Since we don't want to miss one crappy part of this craptastic team, here goes the infielders.

  • Ryan Howard- .266/.319/.465/.784, 11 homers, 34 runs, 43 RBI's, 0.4 WAR, 317 PA's- Take away the contract, i'd say C. Not happening though. F.
  • Chase Utley- .284/.348/.475/.823, 18 homers, 73 runs, 8 steals, 3.9 WAR, 531 PA's- This is not 2008 Utley. This is not that player. It's a pretty good player though, and one of the best on this team. B+.
  • Jimmy Rollins- .252/.318/.348/.667, 6 homers, 22 steals, 1.6 WAR, 666 PA's- The average, power, and steals are down. The guy stayed healthy, played every day, and still has a glove. To me it's a balanced out C.
  • Michael Young- .276/.336/.395/.731, -0.2 WAR, 512 PA's- This is the guy playing in the NLCS right now. D.
  • Kevin Frandsen- .234/.296/.341/.637, 0 WAR, 278 PA's- Literally the replacement player. This guy had some good moments, and a lot of mediocre and bad ones. He's useful though for playing anywhere. I edge towards the negative though. C-.
  • Freddy Galvis- .234/.283/.385/.668, 6 homers, 0.1 WAR, 222 PA's- A tick over replacement, a lot younger, with a better glove, better power, and room to grow. Still, this wasn't a big step forward for Freddy, who's still valued for his glove mostly. C.
  • Cody Asche- .235/.302/.389/.691, 0 WAR, 179 PA's- I'm seeing a pattern here. I'm going to be kind to Cody though, he was called up later, and played an extra month beyond his norm. C+.
  • Carlos Ruiz- .268/.320/.368/.688, 1.4 WAR, 341 PA's- This was going to be awful, but now it's not. His late season surge picked up an otherwise bad year. Carlos did well enough, and he'll be back. B-.
  • Michael Martinez- .175/.175/.175/.350, -0.6 WAR, 40 PA's- Worst. Player. Ever. That's 40 PA's too many. F-.
  • Pete Orr- .200/.273/.200/.473, -0.2 WAR, 22 PA's- Honestly, he didn't get a real shot, and that's kind of fine. D.
  • Erik Kratz- .213/.280/.386/.666, 9 homers, 0.7 WAR, 218 PA's- After Doc tossed him under the bus, he had some value. A little. C.
  • Humberto Quintero- .250/.294/.406/.700, 2 homers, 0.9 WAR, 68 PA's- Idk. B.
Now the obvious problem with this group is obvious- they had to be better for this team to go anywhere. The time of "if's" needs to end, and the Phillies have to think about life after their core three. This isn't going to carry a team in 2014.
