The Phillies opened up their first roster spot of the offseason today. According to multiple reports, relief pitcher Raul Valdes has been claimed on waivers by the Houston Astors. The waiver claim is a sign that the Phillies were in the process of outrighting Valdes off of the 40-man roster, exposing him to waivers.
Valdes had a shaky 2013, going 1-1 with a 7.46 ERA in multiple stints with the big club. Valdes return appeared unlikely as the team appeared to sour on him. Despite being on the 40-man roster, the Phillies declined to call Valdes up in September when rosters expanded.
