Among the Flyers many rookie leaders from 2011-12, Matt Read
stood out. He jumped out to a hot start and into the spotlight.
The 2012-13 season was not a highlight year for Read. He
struggled early. He suffered a devastating injury just as he started to
improve. But the Flyers have intentions to keep Read around for a while.
The Flyers have signed Read to a four-year extension worth
$14.5 million.
Read, 27, was entering the final season of his entry-level
contract in 2013-14.
Read had an incredible rookie season, despite being among
the oldest in the 2011-12 rookie class. He scored 24 goals and added 23 assists
for a total of 47 points in 79 games.
While struggling to score goals, Read was a regular part of
the Flyers lineup in 2012-13. In 42 games, Read scored 11 goals and added 13
assists for 24 points.
Read had six game-winning goals in 2011-12. In his first 10
games of 2012-13, Read scored just three goals, all in one game against the
Florida Panthers on Jan. 26. 11 of Read’s 24 points came in his final 24 games,
after he returned from injury on March 7 against the Penguins.
The Flyers have already extended Jake Voracek, Claude
Giroux, Wayne Simmonds, Scott Hartnell and Sean Couturier to extensions in the
past two seasons. Read now joins a group of players that will be fixtures of
the Flyers for seasons to come.
