Since the Phillies haven't made very much noise on the road in the past couple of months, their fanbase took it into their own hands to make headlines. According to Steve Miller of CBS Chicago, a few young Phillies fans from the area were caught breaking into Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, earlier today.
In the early morning hours, Steven Gudknecht and Kevin Burge, two relatively tall natives of Chalfont, Pennsylvania (51 minutes north of Philly), somehow slipped through the gates at the historic ballpark. The police report states that the two men fit between a set of bars on a window to break in. At about 4:15 AM, the Phillies fans were caught by security on the field and promptly arrested.
An interview with Burge's mother, Rose, revealed the possible motive for the break in: a picture. Rose believes that the reason the two broke the law was to get a picture of themselves on the ballpark they admired so much. She even went on to admit that it was a stupid move made by big time baseball fans.
I wish this story surprised me more. But, with the way this season has gone, I could do nothing but laugh. It just chalks up to two out-of-towners at the end of long night of "partying" in Chicago, leaving neither being able to think clearly. Each man received a misdemeanor charge of criminal trespassing.
