Michael Young Clears Waivers; Phillies Could Trade Him This August

Michael_young

The Phillies chose not to trade Michael Young before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.  But alas, they will have another chance.  According to many published reports, Young has cleared waivers.  This means that the Phillies are able to now trade him.

While on waivers, any team could have claimed Young.  At that point, the Phillies could have simply let another team take on Young (and his full salary) or worked out a trade.  In that scenario, the Phillies could have pulled Young back and kept him for the rest of the season.   While the Phillies are only paying $6 million of Young's salary this season, any claiming team would have to pay the full $15 million, which probably helped him clear waivers.

One thing that this indicates is that the Phillies are probably looking to move Young.  Recent reports indicate that teams are generally waiting until later in the month to put players on waivers.  But it appears that the Phillies are ready to deal and this starts the process.

In other Michael Young news, he has been pulled from today's lineup with a tight hamstring .  That won't help his trade value.
