Phillies Down A Catcher: Humberto Quintero Elects Free Agency

Humberto

The Phillies' catching depth took a hit today when Humberto Quintero, designated for assignment in favor of utility nothingman Michael Martinez, has cleared waivers and elected free agency, reports MLB Trade Rumors.  Quintero hit .250 in 68 games in two stints with the major league club.

Should the Phillies trade catcher Carlos Ruiz or if Ruiz or Erik Kratz succumb to an injury, the next on the depth chart is either Steven Lerud or Cameron Rupp, not exactly major league options.   The Phillies will probably be on the hunt for a  catcher they can stash at AAA who would work well with pitchers in the event of an injury or trade.

No, Tommy Joseph is not an option.  Joseph is in AA and not a candidate for the Major Leagues this season.
