MLB Trade Rumors posted an article just now about free agent Cuban pitcher Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez being cleared to sign with MLB earlier this week. He could sign as early as next week. The Cubs, Dodgers, Rangers, and Red Sox have been the teams most interested thus far but the Phillies, Blue Jays, and Braves have thrown their hats into the mix as well it appears.
The Phils have been tied to players out of Cuba in recent years such as Yoenis Cespedes and Jorge Solar but have passed on both. It's always a risk but I can't help but wonder if this is one worth taking a shot at. Gonzalez is considered close to major league ready and could probably help a team in the near future. I wouldn't place the Phillies as front runners in this sweepstakes but they're doing their due dilligence. We'll find out more in the coming days I'm sure.
