Marathon Man: Young’s walk-off single wins it in 13

After playing 11 innings on Saturday afternoon, why not play extras again?

Ok, I'm sure that wasn't anybody's wish. But one player was up for the task.

Michael Young played all 11 innings on Saturday afternoon. On Saturday night, he batted lead off and went into the 13th. Young was at the plate with two outs.

The 1-1 pitch from Simon Castro was lined into right field and Jimmy Rollins was racing home. The throw beat him by plenty, but an effective slide allowed him to score safely. That ended a marathon day with a 2-1 Phillies win on Saturday night and early Sunday morning at Citizens Bank Park.

John Lannan and Hector Santiago exchanged scoreless innings. In the fifth, Lannan ran into a jam, loading the bases with no outs.

A run scored on a sacrifice fly by Gordon Beckham, but a double play ended the threat. That would prove huge in the innings that followed.

The Phillies only had two hits in the seventh. The third, from John Mayberry Jr., tied the game. His solo shot just cleared the left-field fence for his seventh home run of the season.

Lannan pitched eight innings for the second straight outing, allowing one run on four hits. He walked one and struck out three.

The Phillies and White Sox also exchanged scoreless innings as the game rolled later and later. The ninth, 10th, 11th and 12th went by with little fanfare. Two significant plays happened on the Phillies end in the field.

Domonic Brown threw out Jeff Keppinger at the plate to end the 11th and Michael Young made a nice diving stop to end the 12th.

Humberto Quintero walked to lead off the 13th and was forced out on a fielder's choice by Rollins. After Joe Savery, who pitched the 13th, bunted him to second, Michael Young was back at the plate.

The Phillies had just four hits in the 13 innings to that point. Young's was the fifth. It scored the game-winning run.

The Phillies improved to 47-48 with the win and split the day-night doubleheader from the Chicago White Sox. They close out the series just hours from the exciting end of this game, playing on Sunday afternoon. Cole Hamels faces Jose Quintana.
