The Flyers welcomed back a familiar face today, signing goaltender Ray Emery to a one-year contract. Having rid themselves of the contract Ilya Bryzgalov by exercising the amnesty clause, Emery will fill the roster spot vacated by the move. Emery will compete for the starting job with goaltender Steve Mason, acquired in April from the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Emery spent the last two seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks, being a member of the Stanley Cup Champion team this past season. Emery is coming off of an impressive season in which he made 19 starts and went 17-1 with a 1.94 GAA and .908 SV%. In Chicago Emery split time with Corey Crawford and the two would win the Williams M. Jennings trophy, awarded to the goaltending duo who allowed the lowest GAA.
Emery played for the Flyers in the 2009 – 2010 season, before having surgery in April to repair an issue in his right hip. Emery started 29 games for the Flyers while going 16-11-0 with a 2.64 GAA and .905 SV%. He will wear his familiar #29. ESPN Chicago has a source that says the deal is worth $1.65 million.
