Pirates Solve Lannan’s Highwire Act in Loss

John Lannan was in and out of trouble for four innings tonight as the Phillies held on to a one run lead that was driven in by Ben Revere. In the 5th, the Pirates finally got to him with a three run blast from Pedro Alvarez. And while they made some noise in the top of the 6th, a wild Phillippe Aumont helped quiet that progress in the bottom of the inning with a tough outing.

Jake Diekman would strike out five to end the 6th and the 7th. It's basically open auditions in the Phillies bullpen right now so every good outing stands for something. This is why you shouldn't buy into this idea that the Phillies might buy at the end of the month. There's too much unsolved.

Savery would keep the Pirates off the boards in the 8th after Melancon held them off in the top of the inning. Grilli would surrender a two run homer from Domonic Brown but would finish off Delmon Young to close it out the 6-5 loss.

Tomorrow promises to be an interesting match up with Pirates' number one prospect Gerrit Cole making his 5th career start against a struggling Cole Hamels. In four stars, Cole has a 3.70 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 11 Ks, and 4 BBs. Hamels was given an extra blow after his outing in San Diego last week and can hopefully get back on track.
