I know a lot of people aren't though. In some cases, they don't want to trade the players they hold in high esteem. In others, they don't want to trade with certain teams. In short, they're fine standing pat, if it doesn't violate one or both of those ideals.
I don't agree though. If team "x" calls you up and says they are proposing a deal that improves your ball club either on the field or in the bank, you should consider their offer. It should not matter if that player is Chase Utley or Michael Martinez, or if that team is the Baltimore Orioles or Washington Nationals, you should at least consider it. If the Yankees are interested in Chase Utley, or someone else, the Phillies should seriously consider it. Chase of 2005-2009 is gone, and he's now 34 and in a walk year. Do you want to commit big money to him? I don't. If the Yankees are making a great offer, or even just a good one, you hear them out.
I know this is a tough time. Players such as Utley, Howard, Rollins, Chooch, Lee, and Papelbon being discussed in trades is not a fun thing. We loved watching these players, and many of them won here. That should not dictate future moves. The Phillies should make the best baseball moves they can, and try to rebuild this team fastest, giving themselves the best economic and baseball chance to compete in 2014 and 2015. If that means dealing a player you love to somewhere you don't, so be it.
