This is just a brief write up on the coming MLB Draft which begins on Thursday night. The Phillies are picking 16th overall which is the highest they have picked since 2001 when they took Gavin Floyd 4th overall (who along with Gio Gonzalez turned into half a season of an injury prone Freddy Garcia for the 2007 Phillies). They picked 17th the next season where they selected Cole Hamels which turned out much better for them.
I tend to think one of two things happens in this draft. Someone falls to them or they reach. A lot of mocks I've looked at had the Phillies taking Dominic Smith, first baseman out of Junipero Serra HS in California. Though lately many have him going to the Mets at 11 or Arizona at 15. J.P. Crawford, a shorstop out of Lakewood HS in California also projects to go around 16 but seems likely to go earlier. RHP Ryne Stanek from Arkansas or D.J. Peterson 3B from New Mexico are also two to watch but as with Smith and Crawford, could beat the Phils to the punch.
Tim Anderson, a shortstop from East Central in Mississippi seems a logical choice if Crawford is gone though it's a bit of a reach. I also wouldn't put it past Amaro to take fellow Stanford man, outfielder Austin Wilson.
My prediction: Assuming Crawford, Smith and Perterson are gone I think the Phillies follow the Jesse Biddle model and reach at 16 and take local southpaw Rob Kaminsky out of St. Joseph Regional HS in New Jersey.
