He's back! Tonight the Phillies announced that they have recalled left-handed reliever Joe Savery from AAA Lehigh Valley, according to the Allentown Morning Call's Mandy Housenick. Savery will fill the roster spot vacated by John Lannan, who heads to the 15-day disabled list.
Just earlier I pretty much ruled Savery out since the Phillies have three other left-handed relievers in the bullpen already. The Phillies will add a reliever now, then add a starter before Monday night's game.
In an Iron Pig pen that has had a ton of trouble getting people out, Savery has been stellar. In five appearances, Savery has allowed no runs and two hits.
Once a first round pick if the Phillies, Savery lost his fastball and began the 2011 season as a first baseman and designated hitter for the Clearwater Threshers. But one extra inning game after Darin Ruf pitched Savery got another chance. The Phillies liked what they saw and Savery was soon pitching again.
Savery's 2012 in the majors was not strong. With a 1-2 5.40 showing at the big league level, the Phillies declined to bring Savery back in September when rosters expanded. Further, Savery pitched little in Spring Training and was sent to minor league camp.
Once again when he seemingly was counted out, Savery showed the team something. Let's see what he's got.
