Phillies Cut Five More, Including World Baseball Classic Combatants

B.J. Rosenberg is among those sent to minor league camp

More cuts today in Clearwater after a rare Spring Training day off.   They are passed on via Phillies writer for MLB.com Todd Zolecki.

Today's cuts are:

  • CF Tyson Gillies
  • C Sebastian Valle
  • RHP B.J. Rosenberg
  • RHP Tyler Cloyd
  • LHP Mauricio Robles

So we know from this that Tyler Cloyd is not being considered to be the fifth starter anymore. While there may be some competition from Aaron Cook, John Lannan appears to be it.

Rosenberg will not make the cut for the bullpen.  With guaranteed spots to Jonathan Papelbon, Mike Adams, Chad Durbin, and Antonio Bastardo, the Phillies need one additional lefty and have two spots to fill for a righty reliever.   With Phillippe Aumont, Michael Stutes, and Justin DeFratus in the mix alongside a potential third left-handed reliever, Rosenberg had stiff competition.

The Phillies have not said anything about Valle and Gillies' invovlement in the bench-clearing brawl at the World Baseball Classic Team Mexico-Team Canada game on Sunday.   But this may be telling.   The Phillies have opted to keep catchers Carlos Ruiz, Erik Kratz, Stephen Lerud, and Humberto Quintero.   Valle angered Phillies pitcher Phillippe Aumont for sparking the brawl while protected with a mask.   Gillies was front and center in the brawl for bodyslamming Red Sox pitcher Alfredo Aceves.

Robles was a lefty reliever minor league pickup who pitched one clean inning, but otherwise hardly got any work this Spring.  He did not figure into the Phillies plans and it is surprising he was around this long.
